CHALLENGE
How might we utilize the city infrastructure, lamppost, to enhance the overall visiting experience?
Design for the prompt “Lampposts”
Utilizing AR technology to the design solution
Applying digital elements to physical infrastructure
SOLUTION
What is Lumi Hub?
1.Start with a Story …
In 2027, Providence...
AR now is part of everyday life...
People use AR Glasses to improve efficiency…
2. Here is Jay
She is planning to explore interesting clubs and activities at Brown University.
3. Bump into a Event
She bumps into the State Event provided by LumiHub on the street with dynamic interactions and visual advertisement.
4. Go to interact
She decides to interact with the State Event by playing an AR basketball shooting exercise (Example)
5. Showing invitation & Info
After participating in the AR event, she can see how well she did in this exercise and also receives an invitation provided by the club
6. Showing invitation & Info
After participating in the AR event, she can see how well she did in this exercise and also receive an invitation provided by the club.
Activate!
Users can knock on the Lamppost to activate the AR assistant for additional information!!
Add Value to Lampposts
By transforming the lamppost into a city landmark, we aim to add daytime value, harnessing its ubiquitous presence to create a convenient hub for information and interaction. These “urban elves”—playful visual elements integrated into the lamppost design—serve as an open invitation for citizens to engage more deeply with their city, discovering and connecting with its many hidden facets through everyday encounters.
OVERVIEW
This project stemmed from the prompt “lamppost,” where we reimagined this common piece of urban infrastructure as an AR-powered platform to foster local community engagement. By integrating interactive experiences into lampposts, the solution aims to enhance social connections among residents and improve their overall visiting experience in the city.
EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH
Several public experiments to test Public engagements/potential interactions/ point of interests
To understand how people engage with public activities and what attract them the most, we did several different experiments to see what is the thing that people are most interested in and want to participate the most. All these tests help us to validate the possibility of creating these public engaged activities for people to interact with. The result surprised us a lot since we gain many useful insights based on these simple tasks.
QR code Test: Comparing the attraction between 3D object and 2D poster
Discrepancy Test: To quantify how much an observed dataset deviates from the predictions of a specified model or hypothesis.
Public Drawing: To see how people interactive with the activity when there is no instruction
Public Voting: To see whether people are interested in voting
SECONDARY RESEARCH
OBSERVATION ON STREET
Lampposts become information Hubs for the city
To understand how we can utilize the existing infrastructure in the city to improve the engagement of citizens and build up an close community, we went on the street to observe what is happening on the lamppost nowadays. We have discover a few of interesting points that can become the potentials for our design.
Community Info
Providing local information, including business updates, lost and found announcements, and other messages from the town.
Physical Structure
Lampposts serve as a ubiquitous infrastructure throughout the city, providing a shared platform for disseminating physical information.
Artistic Expression
Some of the posters and advertisements display artistic elements.
DESIGN THINKING & INSIGHTS
How we can utilized gathered information about Lampposts to enhance overall experience?
Lamppost is a city infrastructure that exists in every single corner which only works during the night. We want to utilize this “information Hub” to apply value to the lamppost during the day for more useful interaction to build a local community.
How might we corporate AR into our design to enhance engagement ?
AR transforms city lampposts into a more sustainable and efficient resource, serving as a valuable information hub for citizens. This initiative allows residents to benefit from this ubiquitous infrastructure.
LUMI HUB will serve as a Company and Lamppost AR Platform
A company that creates an AR platform on lampposts, enabling cities to utilize this platform to foster a local community for both residents and visitors
SYSTEM DESIGN
Speculative Design
As this product is a conceptual design for the future, it is essential to understand how this platform will integrate into the existing community. We must also identify the types of contributors who will add value to this platform, thereby helping to realize the vision of LumiHub.
FINAL DESIGN
Lumis (City Mascots) - City Invitation
The Lumis, exquisite beings of light, gracefully fulfill the pivotal role of emissaries, extending a warm and cordial invitation to the inhabitants of the city to engage and partake in their enchanting presence, fostering a harmonious and interactive atmosphere.
AR Feature States
Base State: Without an invitation, users need to actively interact with the lamppost to view the interface.
Event State: With a visual invitation, users can randomly see those AR lamppost invitations on the street.
1. Base State (Without invitation)
After tapping on the lamppost, users can access the AR interface to discover more information about the nearby surroundings of the city. Additionally, the interface provides navigation that accompanies users and guides them to their final destination.
2. Event State (With invitation)
These invitations display dynamic information on the street, offering appealing advertisements for citizens to view nearby events or promotional content.
Other interactions
Part of Event States
LumiHub offers additional interactive features to encourage greater engagement among citizens and foster community building.
